1MDB Said to Seek Loan Extension Before $3 Billion Energy IPO

(Bloomberg) -- 1Malaysia Development Bhd. is planning to seek another one-month extension on a 2 billion ringgit ($554 million) loan to give it more time to sell a stake in its energy unit, two people familiar with the matter said.

The state-owned investment company needs more time to repay the debt as it’s still in discussions with billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan, Malaysia’s second-richest person, said the people who asked not to be named as the process is private. Krishnan may excercize an option, granted when he sold energy assets to 1MDB in 2012, to buy part of the Edra Global Energy Bhd. unit, the people said. A spokesman for 1MDB declined to comment when contacted by phone.

1MDB, whose advisory board is headed by Prime Minister Najib Razak, has been criticized by opposition politicians for its increasing debt, which reached 41.9 billion ringgit as of March 2014, according to the company’s annual report. Once it has settled the loan, IMDB plans to list Edra Global in a $3 billion initial public offering that would be Malaysia’s biggest since Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd. went public in 2012.

Bank Negara Malaysia doesn’t comment on individual companies, Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz told reporters in Putrajaya, outside of Kuala Lumpur, when asked about 1MDB’s debt on Tuesday.

“We have arrangements to deal with it, so that no individual entity is going to have systemic implications on the overall financial system and our economy,” she said.

If granted, it will be the third extension of the loan from Malayan Banking Bhd. and four other lenders. 1MDB was given a grace period until the end of January to repay the debt, The Edge newspaper reported Jan. 6.
