KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — MP Tony Pua wants to know why the Ministry of Defence is spending RM27.5 million on women's shoes for its staff, as revealed in the MyProcurement portal.

The contract was awarded to Syarikat Visi Footwear Sdn Bhd for supply and delivery of leather shoes for women civil servants in the ministry.

Speaking to reporters in Parliament, he said, “We know the prime minister's wife aims to make Malaysia the Shoe Capital of the East but surely, a RM27.5 million purchase of ladies’ footwear for civilian staff is not the way to achieve the goal?

“We would like to call upon the Minister of Defence to explain this incredible shopping spree for ladies shoes for his ministry,” said the DAP Petaling Jaya Utara MP.

He later quipped in his tweet, "How many Pradas is that?"

Recently, the MyProcurement portal showed that the largest contract awarded since June 2009 — amounting to RM6.5billion — had been awarded to Syarikat Era Frozen Sdn Bhd by the Ministry of Defence.

However, the contract was later amended to RM6.5 million.

Pua urged all Malaysians to help the government by analysing the MyProcurement portal.

“I call upon all civic-minded Malaysians to continue perusing and analysing the data within the MyProcurement portal as and if it gets updated to ensure that there is increased transparency in government procurement, and ultimately, to reduce and eliminate rent-seeking, patronage and the associated corruption deeply entrenched within the system,” he added.
